A workspace is the container for your team, clients, projects and data. Creating one is the first thing you do, and the person who creates it becomes its Owner.

When you need a new workspace

Most businesses need exactly one. Create a second only when you have genuinely separate books:
Do not create a workspace per client. You would split your reporting, lose cross-client profitability, and pay for each workspace separately.

Create it

1

Open the workspace switcher

In the sidebar, then choose Create workspace. If you have just signed up, you are taken through this automatically.
2

Name the workspace

Use your business name – “Northwind Studio”. This is what people see in the switcher and in emails.
3

Note the URL slug

A short name is generated from the workspace name, like northwind-studio. It appears in every URL and does not change afterwards:
4

Set the default currency

The currency budgets, rates, invoices and reports use by default. Individual rates can be recorded in others. See currencies.
5

Set the timezone

This is the workspace’s reference timezone. Each person’s timezone comes from their work schedule, not from here. See dates, times and timezones.
6

Create

You land in the new workspace as its Owner.

About the slug

The slug is generated from the workspace name, and it is fixed once the workspace is created. Renaming the workspace later does not change it. That is a good thing: every link you share keeps working even if you rebrand. It also means the name you type at creation decides your URL, so type the one you want. If another workspace already holds that slug, a number is added to keep it unique.

What is set up for you

A new workspace arrives ready to use:
  • You as Owner, with every permission
  • The 15 apps in their default state – most on, with Time Clock and Location rules off
  • The seven standard roles
  • Sensible date and time formats you can change
  • The Free plan
You do not have to configure anything before your team can start tracking.

What to do next

1

Add a client and a project

2

Set rates

Without a rate, hours have no monetary value. Set a person rate
3

Invite your team
